; Ground Elevation AMSL: 1471 ft (448.3 m)Carter's Mountain just south of Charlottesville is home to a large number of transmission antennas. This radio site lies just to the east of the 13000-square-mile National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) established in 1958 to protect the radio telescopes in Green Bank, WV and the radio receiving facilities in Sugar Grove, WV. The power of transmissions in the NRQZ is restricted, so major broadcasters in the Charlottesville area located their antennas here.
